Our most recent Twitter chat guests was Kathryn Dishman-Baird – award winning PR professional and content creator. She was named ‘Entrepreneur of the year’ at the 2016 Newcastle Business Awards, and helps her clients successfully grow their businesses.

Kathryn truly believe that every business has their own story to tell and she’s the brand storyteller who can help you share it, burst out of your PR Bubble, attract new custom and grow your business.

Here she is in her own words, telling us how to make the most of storytelling and PR for your business #LikeAPro

Q1. What are the benefits of storytelling for marketing our business?

Marketing IS storytelling. If you’re not using your marketing to share the story of your business, what you do and who you are with the world then you’re missing a HUGE opportunity.

Storytelling can help you build a connection and relationships with your audiences, motivate and inspire them. It can make your content more exciting, but more importantly, it will keep people coming back for more because your fans will want to follow your story.

Q2. How can we get exposure for our business?

There are so many ways. Here are some ideas:

  • Write press releases
  • Create high quality content
  • Make a noise on social media
  • Collaborate with others
  • Host or speak at events
  • Interview industry leaders
  • Make guest appearances

I’m not saying you need to move forward with all of these, but you should be aware of them. Explore what works for you and use it to the max to get the exposure you need to grow your business.

Q3. What are your top tips for getting started with PR in today’s digital age?

Two things – firstly you need to have a plan and secondly, you need to stay focused.

With so many platforms out there for us to share content, it’s so easy to get distracted spending time on channels that don’t work for our businesses.

Q4. Often when we get started on social, we solely focus on sharing other people’s content. What are the challenges with this approach?

Your followers won’t get to know you or your brand.

It’s fine to share other people’s content sometimes but you need to create your own to build your credibility, share your knowledge and create connections.

That’s how you’ll turn followers into customers

Q5. Most people struggle with new ideas for their content marketing, what are great blog titles to tell your own story – most of our members are social media or digital marketing freelancers

Blogs that share challenges you’ve faced and overcome work really well because they show that you’re human. For example:

  • What X can teach you about …
  • X reasons why your X isn’t working (and how to fix it)
  • X tools you should be using to …

Also blogs that share your knowledge of the wider industry and influencers work well:

  • The worst advice you can hear about x
  • X 101: Everything you need to know
  • X Blogs you should be reading on x
  • X podcasts you should be listening to on x

Q6. What are your top tips for social media content that gets clients?

  • Use the right channel(s)
  • Share content that inspires action
  • Check in on your feed & followers every day
  • Start / get involved in conversations
  • Understand the algorithm
  • Use good calls to action to your sales funnel
  • Be yourself

Q7. What learnings can you share from setting up your business?

Be who you are both online and offline. There’s nothing worse than meeting a business owner who has one personality online but another in person.

Also, don’t compare yourself to others – easier said than done I know – but we’re all different. Just be you.
